Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme

Every year Armed Forces personnel return home to the region after leaving the Services but returning to Civvy Street is not without its challenges. In some cases, the veterans, or those injured in the line of duty, find it difficult to cope with life outside the Forces, and in many cases need extra support and help to re-adjust. It is hoped the College can play a key role is helping not only these veterans but also reservists and their families get back onto the career ladder.

The Armed Forces Covenant

The Covenant is a promise from the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. The Covenant was signed by Naomi Robson, Vice Principal Resources, in 2019 and resigned by Vikkie Morton, Vice Principal Curriculum and Student Services (City Campus) in September 2023. Following this we were awarded the Armed Forces Covenant, Employer Recognition Scheme - Bronze Award.

The College has committed to helping establish employment opportunities for Service leavers, reservist and their family members and recognising the unique and transferable skills and experiences they possess. To support this commitment, we have committed to offering an interview to any service leaver, reservist or their family members, who meet the essential criteria of the role they have applied for.

As part of a review of our Special Leave Policy in January 2023, we committed to granting our Reservists an additional two weeks paid leave per year (FTE: 10 days - pro rata for part time employees based on contractual average working days) specifically to enable them to attend their annual camp.

To further cement our commitment to supporting those staff currently working for the College and those who join us in the future we have launched our Reserve Forces Training & Mobilisation Policy and Procedure and associated Manager and Employee Guidance.

In relation to the College's commitment, Peter Monaghan, Head of SEND and High Needs and Curriculum says.

"Having served in both the regular army and reserves, including a tour in Afghanistan, I understand firsthand the importance of employer support. The assistance from EPNE not only aids in attending annual camps but also provides peace of mind. Knowing that my job remains secure, even if called up for active duty with the regular army, reinforces the invaluable role employers play in supporting the dedication, adaptability, and commitment to excellence that Ex Forces and Reservists bring to the workplace."

Armed Forces Staff Network

To continue our work to support service leavers, reservists and members of their families, we are looking to create an Armed Forces Network.

Employee networks are integral to building a well-represented, happy and productive workforce. The hope is that an Armed Forces Network will help to make our Armed Forces community employees feel acknowledged and help guide us on how best to offer support. The network is open to service leavers and veterans, reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, family members and anyone else with an interest in the Armed Forces.
